Dear Members,

Summer school 2010 is fast approaching. This year we look forward to welcoming Miyamoto Sensei back after a years absence. With a new venue in Worcester featuring ultra modern accommodations and a fantastic sports centre, we have been able to expand the teaching schedule and offer you a fantastic Aikido training experience. Please don’t hesitate to book your place early, as space is limited. For more details, please check the British Birankai Website (http://www.britishbirankai.com/) .

Embassy of Japan Magazine - May 2010
London Aikikai - Traditional Aikido in London
Online version: www.uk.emb-japan.go.jp/en/wm/may10.html

5 May is Kodomo-no-hi (Children’s Day) in Japan. People celebrate this Day by flying Koinobori (carp streamers), as the carp symbolize fortitude, in the hope that their children (traditionally male children) will become prosperous and successful in their lives. The month of May has much on offer with both traditional and non-traditional Japanese culture.

The European premiere of “Musashi” directed by Yukio Ninagawa at the Barbican (5-8 May) will be a tribute to the late Hisashi Inoue, the great Japanese playwright and writer. His distinctive works were humorous yet sprinkled with satire on Japanese society. Inoue’s Musashi is certain to amuse the British audience with its atypical samurai story. It is said that he was very much looking forward to the London performance of Musashi when he passed away on 9 April.

Fine weather is very much hoped for on 23 May when the Japanese Garden Party takes place at Hammersmith Park in celebration of the centenary of the Japan-British Exhibition 1910. Outside London, the Japanese Garden Society has helped build a Japanese garden at Norfolk’s favourite building, the Norwich Cathedral, introducing an interesting Japanese element in a not-so-Japanese environment

The art works of the members of the Japan Society is on display at the Embassy of Japan. Now in its second year, the exhibition once again reveals the artistic talents of its members. Come and vote for your favourite work by 26 May. Anyone can vote in this competition.

Similarly, the Japan Foundation’s Japan Webpage Contest for Schools 2010 has over 30 entries which display all kinds of Japan-related activities. Find out about them and vote for your favourite before 10 am on 13 May.

Kabuki will be back again at Sadler’s Wells 4-15 June. Kabuki superstar Ebizo Ichikawa XI will perform the epic play Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura (Yoshitsune and the Thousand Cherry Trees).

A Japanese Garden in Norwich Cathedral

In the autumn of 2009 the Japanese Garden Society (JGS) received a very unusual request - to help with the design and construction of a Japanese garden in Norwich cathedral...
